5 Marketing Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers

If you’re not careful, your marketing strategy can easily become an ineffective waste of time and money. It may seem as though every decision you make goes right, but there are always going to be mistakes that pop up every once in a while, and these mistakes will cost you customers if you’re not careful about how you handle them. Here are five marketing mistakes that are hurting your business right now, and how to avoid them moving forward.

Lack of Organization

The first step to creating an effective marketing strategy is to get organized. Without a plan, your marketing efforts will be all over the place and you'll never be able to track your progress. How can you make money if you don't know what is working? Get organized by dividing tasks into short-term and long-term goals, then breaking those goals down into monthly and weekly tasks. From there, break them down even further into manageable steps each day or week. Once you have everything planned out on paper it's much easier to maintain focus on accomplishing your tasks.

Planning ahead for your marketing needs also helps you stay one step ahead of your competition because you're always looking for new ways to reach potential customers. If you neglect planning altogether, things can go wrong quickly! Lack of organization is a major mistake because when sales slow down it's easy to think oh well I'll just wait until they pick up again. But waiting only delays the inevitable; eventually revenue will start falling as more and more customers slip away.

Lack of Consistency

Consistency is key when it comes to marketing. If your messaging, branding, and advertising are all over the place, customers will be confused and turned off. Make sure you have a solid plan in place before you start spending money on marketing, and stick to it! It’s also important to communicate with current customers on a regular basis; they may know what other audiences might like or dislike about your product/service, or they might need assistance using something they bought from you. A few good ways to stay consistent with customer communication include: sending out weekly emails that include information about new arrivals, discounts and promotions; posting updates via social media (if this is something you use) or by making announcements in-store; or simply having conversations with current customers when they come into the store (which should happen frequently).

Bad Communication With Clients

In any business, communication is important. This is especially true when it comes to marketing. If you're not communicating effectively with your clients, you could be losing out on valuable business.

Here are five marketing communication mistakes that could be costing you customers
  1. Not asking for feedback
  2. Not listening to the feedback you do get
  3. No one-on-one interaction with clients
  4. Thinking too much about what other people think of your brand
  5. Constantly posting and promoting products instead of engaging in conversation

Not Listening to the Customer

The customer is always right, or at least their opinion should hold a lot of weight in your business. After all, they are the ones shelling out the money for your product or service. Too often, businesses make the mistake of not listening to what the customer wants and needs. This can lead to lost sales and a loss of customers.  In order to prevent this from happening, you need to take a step back and really listen to what the customer has to say. Once you know exactly what they want and need, it will be easier for you to create marketing campaigns that work better for them.

Letting Fear Get in the Way

Fear is one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of success. When it comes to marketing, fear can manifest itself in a number of ways. Maybe you're afraid of being too sales-y, or you're afraid of putting yourself out there. Whatever the case may be, letting fear get in the way is costing you customers. The only way to overcome this obstacle is by taking action. Make sure that your voice is heard and your brand gets noticed. Push past your fears and start communicating with your audience through marketing techniques like blog posts, social media campaigns, email newsletters, etc.

Final Words

When it comes to marketing, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one business might not work for another.  We’ve given you a few mistakes that can cause customers to turn away from your company, but you should know that every business has challenges and every business will make mistakes. It’s how you react when faced with those mistakes that really matters. How do you handle criticism? Do you give up after a small setback or do you figure out a way around the problem? These are all things worth considering as your company grows and evolves.
